{"id":6242,"date":"2026-06-27T20:01:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T20:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pekay.net\/?page_id=6242"},"modified":"2026-06-27T20:03:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T20:03:58","slug":"case-study-intertek","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pekay.net\/index.php\/about\/joel-pekay-resume\/case-study-intertek\/","title":{"rendered":"Case Study &#8211; Intertek"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Building a $50M Global Regulatory and Sustainability Business<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em><em>From Emerging Compliance Service to Enterprise Growth Platform<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Business Context<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When I joined Intertek as Global Marketing and Sales Director for Restricted Substances, the business represented an emerging opportunity focused primarily on helping manufacturers navigate rapidly evolving regulations including RoHS, REACH, and Proposition 65.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Working alongside a PhD chemist and an electrical engineer, I was responsible for building and scaling the global commercial engine for the business creating market awareness, developing customer demand, enabling sales teams, and translating complex regulatory science into business solutions customers could understand and purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the business evolved from a niche compliance offering into a global Health, Environmental, and Regulatory organization generating approximately <strong>$50 million in annual recurring revenue<\/strong>, supported by <strong>200 professionals worldwide<\/strong>, and serving manufacturers, retailers, brands, and supply chains across virtually every industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As the organization expanded, I retained global responsibility for the regulatory business while assuming leadership of North American marketing for Intertek&#8217;s Chemical &amp; Pharmaceutical division, supporting approximately $281 million in annual revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Business Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Manufacturers around the world were facing an unprecedented wave of regulatory change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">European RoHS requirements were transforming electronics manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">REACH was fundamentally changing chemical compliance obligations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Proposition 65 introduced new risks for products sold into California.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Sustainability and environmental stewardship were rapidly becoming business priorities rather than compliance requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">While Intertek possessed world-class scientific expertise, the organization needed a scalable commercial strategy capable of transforming technical capabilities into market leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Growth Strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Our approach focused on five priorities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Commercialize Technical Expertise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Translated scientific and engineering expertise into practical business solutions supported by thought leadership, customer education, and sales enablement programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Build Global Demand Generation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Developed integrated global marketing campaigns designed to accelerate awareness, adoption, and customer acquisition across multiple industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Win Strategic Customers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Established market credibility through early adoption by leading global manufacturers, retailers, and brands including Apple, Cisco, GE Healthcare, Honeywell, IKEA, Intel, Mattel, Nike, Qualcomm, and 3M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Scale Through Acquisition Integration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Led one acquisition integration and supported two additional strategic acquisitions while creating a unified customer experience, commercial strategy, and go-to-market approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5.
